Checklist: 2-Phased Installation

This is a formalization of previous notes, illustrating the process of system deployment. The steps during phase 2 are of particular interest to clients. It shows you what to expect and where/when your involvement might be required.

Phase 1 install, in-shop at Bravo:

  1. hardware diagnostics
  2. prep HD: MBR, hide all existing partitions (to not interfere w/ drive letter scheme)
  3. install slipstreamed o.s.
  4. configure RDP & telnet; test remote admin
  5. install devices drivers
  6. minimal trimming
  7. product activation (for OEM & retail versions, not req. for corporate licenses)
  8. test fresh boot
  9. interim ghost
  10. create/unhide AUXI
  11. transfer i386 + SP2-CAB (for XP/W2K only)
  12. apply patches
  13. install host-based firewall + custom rules
  14. install SAV/SEP & update (if unmanaged, otherwise perform during phase 2)
  15. install custom office + patches (if unmanaged, otherwise phase 2 deployment)
  16. product activation (for all 2007 editions, and 2003 OEM & retail versions)
  17. install fox-it, jpeg2000 + js upg
  18. major trimming
  19. fallback ghost
  20. Bravo custom tools
  21. Bravo lib
  22. install ImgBurn, test burns
  23. optional (klite, AIM-LT)
  24. phase 1 inventory & documentation (belarc, cpuz, etc.)
  25. final clean-up
  26. as-released ghost
  27. BIRD
  28. burn-in

Checklist for End User

After Pick-up/Delivery of System:

  • physically connect it (see Checklist)
  • login as to your user account
  • confirm Internet connection is live by visiting a web site
  • notify me to take over Phase 2, before proceeding to use the station
  • Phase 2 install, after physical hook-up to your network:

    1. outbound Internet test from workstation
    2. program gateway router, perimeter firewall filters, NAT redirects
    3. adjust TCP/IP settings as needed
    4. add CAL to server (if applicable)
    5. join domain (if applicable)
    6. Exchange Server and mailbox setup (if applicable)
    7. POP email setup (if applicable)
    8. SAV/SEP server-based deployment to workstation (for managed sites)
    9. setup server data & other shares (including "portals" to workstations)
    10. configure My Documents
    11. install network printers
    12. install local printers
    13. install site-specific network-based apps (administrative install/deployment)
    14. customize network-wide patch management system
    15. setup/adjust backup schemes and jobs
    16. phase 2 inventory & documentation (belarc, cpuz, etc.)
    17. final ghost, and replicate to ghost image repository
    18. schedule follow-up and review
